Wayne’s Acceptance to Stanford University

Wayne Chinganga

Wayne Chinganga arrived at MaP in January 2018 to join the Lower 6th Form. He could never have imagined the opportunities that lay ahead, let alone an acceptance letter from Stanford University, California, USA. Stanford is ranked second in the world, according to the QS Global Universities’ World Ranking.

Wayne’s parents: Daniel Chinganga and Regina Matava

Being at MaP was a defining time in Wayne’s education as it encouraged healthy competition, which in turn pushed him to work harder. He got a great deal of help along the way, especially from Ms Jobson: our former Director of Careers & College Counselling, who guided Wayne through the application process. Science teachers, Mr Noble and Mr Wanda wrote strong recommendation letters; the visiting Harvard students gave him advice; the Teachers’ Aids helped with looking over his essays (he wrote a whopping 11) and he even had help from his peers in the boarding house.

Perhaps the most important support Wayne received was from his own parents. While in the boarding house, he would talk to his father every day. Wayne says his dad was a great help to him when he applied to both MaP and Stanford.

Applying to university is difficult, so Wayne’s advice is to be up for the challenge, do your research, work hard, be consistent and give it your all. For students who want to come to MaP, he encourages them to work hard, be sociable and, once here, consider doing a service like Naledi Teaching, where you can help other students and see their progress.

This new adventure will be Wayne’s first plane trip and journey abroad. What we can learn from him is that everyone’s dreams and aspirations are valid; be brave and never give up!

(Former Maru-a-Pula Deputy Principal and Principal)

The Maru-a-Pula School community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rre David Matthews on Friday, 26 April 2024. Rre Matthews was one of the founders of Maru-a-Pula School serving as Deane Yates’ Deputy Principal from it’s opening in 1972. The Matthews family moved to Johannesburg in 1978 and Rre Matthews subsequently returned to Maru-a-Pula in 1981 when he was appointed Principal. He deftly steered the school through his 10 years of stewardship, transforming it from a pioneering venture to a fully established school of very high reputation, both locally and internationally.

Rre Matthews was greatly loved by the Maru-a-Pula students, the staff and the community. He leaves his wife, Hilary, his daughter, Margaret and his sons, Edward and Robert. All his children were educated at Maru-a-Pula.

Maru-a-Pula remains deeply in his debt and we extend our sincere condolences to the family during this difficult time.

In the week starting February 3rd, MaP was blessed to have Mr David Salako, a Board Member of Books for Development, at the school. Mr Salako originates from Malawi, has lived in places such as the UK, Nigeria, and Kenya and now resides in Houston, Texas in the US. Books for Development is a non-profit organisation that donates books in under-developed countries to encourage and support global literacy. Books for Development brought 35,000 books for Botswana government schools around the country. He was impressed by the availability of infrastructure for libraries and schools but also said that, having visited, he is now more aware of their specific needs such as shelving and a variety of book genres for students in rural communities. With a population of 2,333,954 (Worldometer),Botswana currently has 41 public libraries and 61 Village Reading Rooms with a new library opening in Masunga on 12th March.  Mr Salako was thrilled to be at MaP, describing the school as a “motivated, international, diverse environment where learning is encouraged”. He hopes to return to Botswana and to maintain relationships with the schools he worked with during his trip.

Mr and Mrs Creighton

After four years of service, teaching History and English, as well as coaching the U17 rugby team, Mr Graham Creighton and his family bade farewell to MaP. In an emotional assembly on June 28th, students shared their farewell messages with him:
Aishani Ittan (4K): “I am highly honoured to be given the chance to deliver this speech. We have all gathered here to bid farewell to our exceptional mentor, coach and teacher, Mr Creighton.
The time I spent in your history classroom made me realize that you are, no doubt, one of the most knowledgeable and respectful teachers I have ever met. Thank you! I would never have chosen or loved History the way I do if it wasn’t for you.”
Boago Chabaesele (4K): “All the memories we shared with you will always be glued in our hearts. You made life bearable. You have been a great friend and mentor to me. I appreciate those times in the boarding house when you were like a father to me. Mr Creighton you are one reason school is so much fun. We will miss you. Tsamaya sentle.”
In a heartfelt speech, Mr Creighton said, “MaP hasn’t just been a place of work for me; it’s been my home. You’ve embraced my family and I thank you dearly for that. This is where my children’s first memories will always be. It is where Andy took his first steps; where Thomas learned to ride his bicycle and where we got our first dog. All of these experiences are something that you have shared with us.”.

On Friday, June 7th, Leungo, Lame, Muhammed, Bogosi and I had the honour of attending the Botswana Stock Exchange opening ceremony, “the Ringing of the Bell”, where the Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Honourable Thapelo Olopeng, officiated. This involved ringing the bell, which indicates the commencement of trading for the day. They also announced that they will be holding the annual BSE Senior Secondary Schools Finance and Investment competition, in which we will be participating. We are looking forward to competing and attempting to beat the current champions, Lobatse Senior Secondary School. Attending this prestigious event was an enriching experience and we are all looking forward to the competition in August.
