Passing of Rre David Matthews

(Former Maru-a-Pula Deputy Principal and Principal)

The Maru-a-Pula School community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rre David Matthews on Friday, 26 April 2024. Rre Matthews was one of the founders of Maru-a-Pula School serving as Deane Yates’ Deputy Principal from it’s opening in 1972. The Matthews family moved to Johannesburg in 1978 and Rre Matthews subsequently returned to Maru-a-Pula in 1981 when he was appointed Principal. He deftly steered the school through his 10 years of stewardship, transforming it from a pioneering venture to a fully established school of very high reputation, both locally and internationally.

Rre Matthews was greatly loved by the Maru-a-Pula students, the staff and the community. He leaves his wife, Hilary, his daughter, Margaret and his sons, Edward and Robert. All his children were educated at Maru-a-Pula.

Maru-a-Pula remains deeply in his debt and we extend our sincere condolences to the family during this difficult time.
