Permaculture

The Permaculture project at Maru-a-Pula is led by Prentiss Darden and is funded by an American organization called Burners without Borders. The students are working to grow a garden on the school grounds using the techniques of permaculture, which emphasizes caring for the earth and interacting with the environment in mutually beneficial ways. The current goal is to produce quality, fresh, organic produce for the school kitchen in order to benefit the school community. After the students have successfully completed implementing permaculture at MaP, a local food stand will be offered for the benefit of the community. The last phase of the project will be educating the community including other local schools and local HIV Clinics so that everyone can benefit from nutritious organic vegetables. MaP’s Permaculture project exemplifies the school’s desires to be a leader in environmental awareness and responsibility and its commitment to community service.
