So You Want to Give Back?

Why Give Back?

We have tried to make it easy to contribute to Maru-a-Pula because we really need your support! Here are examples of areas in which you can help:

Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVC) Bursary Fund:

MaP established this programme in 2005 and started with 2 recipients that year. We have since grown the programme to 28 recipients this year. We provide these students with free tuition, room & board, medical aid, uniforms and books, toiletries and a stipend. This year, the cost to Maru-a-Pula was P2.5 million, which must be paid completely from contributions to the school. Of note, September of this year found two of our first OVC recipients starting university in the US on full scholarships. Gobakwe is at Stanford University, and Tshiamo is at MIT.

Capital Development Programme (CDP):

Shockingly, Maru-a-Pula has not featured a new building on campus in well over 10 years. The money that has been budgeted for capital expenditure has been used for more discreet improvements, such as air conditioners in the classrooms and grass on the fields, as well as more dramatic improvements to the Library and Boarding Houses. Still, with a growing student body and elevated expectations of a Maru-a-Pula education, we must raise revenue to be put aside for new buildings and other major renovations.

Community Service & Sports Programme (SPE):

Since its founding, Maru-a-Pula has integrated Community Service, sports and enrichment into its curriculum, and they have formed the benchmark of what makes us different. This year, MaP spent approximately P1.2 million purchasing food for destitute families in Old Naledi, Gabane, and other villages and transporting students to over 20 different community service projects, amongst other related expenses. The Sports Programme continues to be strong, with MaP Basketball maintaining its more-than-a-decade-long Championship title, and outstanding seasons in football, rugby and netball amongst others. But most heart-rending is when a highly talented player cannot compete because he or she cannot afford the cost of a kit or other fees associated with being on the team.
