1972-2012: 40 Years of MaP
In February 1972, Maru-a-Pula School opened its doors as one of the first non-racial independent school in southern Africa. Since then over 4,000 students have studied in the classrooms at MaP, played sports on the fields and courts, and put on drama productions.
40 years later and there are definetly reasons to celebrate. Our alumni have attended the most prestigious universities in the world. They are judges, laywers, doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, and humanitarians. MaP alumni are successful in Botswana and all over the world. The Maru-a-Pula School campus has also transformed the addition of new facilities to meet the demands of the evergrowing student body. The AV Centre was built in 1990, we now have grass on the field (!), and just recently two new classrooms were added to the campus as well as the construction of an annex to the library.
Since the day that Maru-a-Pula opened, bursaries have been provided to academically gifted students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend MaP. For many years MaP has been supporting 28 orphans or vulnerable children with tuition, boarding, uniforms, medical expenses, stationery, etc. This is made possible by generous support from companies and individuals. Maru-a-Pula is trying to respond to one of Africa’s greatest challenges: the fact that one in six children in sub-Saharan Africa is an orphan; in Botswana, it’s one in five. Raising funds for the OVC Bursary Fund is the most pressing need and our goal is to raise enough for 40 students in our 40th year.
We have two major events planned for next year and we invite you to join us!
Feb. 4, 2012 - 40th Birthday Bash
This fun day is open to all our current students, parents, alumni, friends, and community members. It will be a day filled with performances, games and good food. We will start the festivities at 10 am. Come and join us for the fun!
July 6-July 8, 2012 - Alumni Reunion Weekend
Come and spend the weekend reconnecting with your old classmates. We look forward to our alumni in Botswana and around the world to come back to the MaP campus and reminisce.
