The Maru-a-Pula Music Department integrates theoretical and practical methods of teaching to inspire an appreciation for and applicable skill in music. The department provides an open, warm and friendly environment for students to explore their musical interests. Music is offered at the IGCSE level for senior students. In these classes, students are graded with continuous assessment and receive a cumulative mark. Additionally, the department also organizes a variety of musical performance groups and ensembles.
One of the most unique aspects of the MaP music department is its marimba program, which tours the United States every two years on alternating coasts. These award-winning tours allow the students to experience what it’s like to be a professional touring musician. Currently, the department is preparing for its July showcase, “Tutti and Soli,” an annual performance that showcases the diversity of MaP’s music program.
The Maru-a-Pula Drama Department is a vibrant community that synthesizes theory and real life acting experience. The department offers lessons at the IGCSE level for Forms 1-5 that helps students explore their passion for acting. In addition to being an examinable subject, drama also has a special place in the school’s extracurricular life.
Senior students have the option of doing drama as an SPE activity. Examples of other activities that the department organizes include school productions, a recent project with UNICEF on girl child rights, and interhouse plays. This year’s theme is “Dad I’ve watched this play six times, I still don’t understand why they still hate each other.” In August 2016, several drama teachers will take a group of 55 students to New York City to attend acting workshops, see Broadway shows, and visit Juilliard. This is the first time that the tour will take place in New York rather than London, which the department tours once every two years.
The Maru-a-Pula Art Department offers classes for Forms 1-6 and teaches students the important skill of visual communication. Visual arts are an essential part of the educational program at MaP because it allows students to explore their own thoughts about subjects, serves as a source of cultural history, and provides a personalized idea of history.
In the past, the department has put on exhibits with neighboring schools that expose students to the idea of exhibiting their work. The art department is also involved with painting murals and beautifying the school with students’ art creations. Currently, it is focused on exploring the creation of art using computers with the goal of integrating different art forms in the digital age.
